Vanuatu officially Awarded World Region of Gastronomy 2027

In a historic recognition of its commitment to cultural integrity and ecological resilience, Vanuatu has been awarded the title of World Region of Gastronomy 2027 by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT). The award highlights Vanuatu’s pioneering role in regenerative agritourism and its unique ability to weave traditional custom knowledge with modern regenerative practices across its 83 islands.

The prestigious title was presented on 15 October 2026 during the 2nd World Gastronomy Summit in Manta, Ecuador. Dr. Diane Dodd, President of IGCAT, officially presented the award to Jerry Spooner, Executive Director of Regenerative Vanua and coordinator of Vanuatu’s candidacy. The ceremony was co-hosted by Econ. Leonardo Orlando Arteaga, Prefect of Manabí, the host region of the 2026 World Region of Gastronomy, who presented a symbolic gift to Mr. Spooner, cementing the bond between the Pacific and Latin American gastronomic communities.

The formal evaluation, conducted online from 1–5 June 2026, involved an international jury of four experts who engaged with over 30 stakeholders. From traditional leaders to agribusiness leaders, participants showcased Vanuatu’s bid book,“KAKAE VANUATU: Remembering the Past, Regenerating the Future”. The jury was particularly impressed by the region’s 25-year strategic plan, which has been endorsed by the Vanuatu Malvatumauri Council of Chiefs, ensuring that the path forward is guided by the wisdom of elders and community ownership.

Jerry Spooner, Executive Director of Regenerative Vanua, expressed his gratitude and excitement for the future: “This award is a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the people of Vanuatu. It validates our belief that our traditional “kastom” practices are not just relics of the past, but vital solutions for our future. We are proud to share our story of regeneration with the world and to work alongside our global partners to ensure that our food systems nourish both our people and our planet.”

With the financial backing of the Council of Ministers and the ongoing leadership of the Vanuatu Regenerative Agritourism, Gastronomy and Agribusiness Association, Vanuatu is now poised to implement its ambitious action plan. The region will focus on strengthening island food systems, preserving cultural memory, and promoting regenerative agritourism as a driver for regenerative development.

As World Region of Gastronomy 2027, Vanuatu will serve as a model for how small island nations can leverage their unique heritage to address global challenges in climate change, nutrition, and cultural preservation.
