Martinique’s gastronomic identity is a vibrant tapestry of AOC agricultural rum, Creole cuisine, terroir products, and time-honored traditions passed down through generations. This rich heritage reflects the island’s deep connection to its land, culture, and people, making it a compelling candidate for recognition.
Martinique has officially joined the World Regions of Gastronomy Platform as a candidate for the 2030 Award, becoming the first Caribbean region to embark on this prestigious journey. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was initially signed by key local stakeholders during the Forum du Tourisme Gourmand in June 2026. This commitment was then officially formalized with IGCAT during the 2nd World Gastronomy Summit in Manabí, Ecuador, on 17 October 2026, marking a significant milestone in Martinique’s strategy to position itself as a destination of culinary excellence by 2030.
The official presentation at the Summit was led by Géraldine Artigny, Head of Gastronomy and Rum Tourism Development at the Martinique Tourism Authority, who represented the region and solidified the partnership with IGCAT.
Among the driving forces behind this initiative are: the Martinique Tourism Authority, leading the tourism sector’s strategic vision; the Lycée Hôtelier de Bellefontaine, nurturing the next generation of hospitality professionals; the Union des Métiers de l’Industrie Hôtelière, representing the island’s hospitality and culinary industries; and CODERUM, championing rum production and agricultural heritage.
In a message of support, Dr. Diane Dodd, President of IGCAT, emphasized:
“Martinique has all the ingredients to make a successful bid – but the key to success will be collaboration. When tourism, agriculture, culture, education, hospitality, chefs, producers, public authorities, communities and young people work together, gastronomy becomes much more than food. It becomes a force for sustainable development, pride, innovation, and international recognition.”
IGCAT stands firmly behind Martinique’s candidacy and looks forward to supporting its journey toward becoming a World Region of Gastronomy.
